We’d hoped to re-open for seven days a week but we’ve now decided a phased approach would be better, allowing us to test out new ways of working against staff and volunteer rotas and also financial viability. This means when we do return to everyday opening, we can be confident that it will be sustainable.

A new exhibition at a local heritage centre is highlighting the impact of plastic waste on sea-life.

Jean Scott, former Chair of the Friends of the Laing Art Gallery, will give the talk called ‘Smugglers, Sailors, Explorers and Eccentrics’ at the Old Low Light Heritage Centre, North Shields Fish Quay on Saturday 14 March at 11am. Entry is £3 (free to Old Low Light members).

A lasting tribute is to be made to a woman who fled slavery in America during the 19th century and became part of the North Shields community.
