Heritage Centre Community Space Cafe & Shop

Discover the North Shields story in a new light.

THE OLD LOW LIGHT PLAYED A KEY PART IN THE TOWN’S SEAFARING PAST. WE ARE MAKING SURE IT CONTINUES TO HAVE AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN THE NORTH SHIELDS COMMUNITY.

We want to tell the fascinating story of North Shields, its Fish Quay and its people. We work with local enthusiasts and local groups to find out more about the town and look for new ways to share this through exhibitions and events.

We are proud of our role in preserving this iconic building, once one of a pair of leading lights guiding ships through the treacherous mouth of the Tyne and now part of the renewal of the Fish Quay. We use local companies and suppliers wherever we can and provide jobs, training and work experience to local people. We rely on the selfless support of volunteers. As a charity, every penny counts and every penny spent at the Old Low Light is used to help us keep going.

Our Story So Far

The heritage centre opened in 2015, its development driven by local enthusiasts passionate about bringing stories of the past to life. When an opportunity arose to use the Old Low Light, a charity was formed and with support from North Tyneside Council, funding was secured to make this happen.
