Heritage Talk – The Soldiers’ Stories

On this day of remembrance, we are pleased to welcome Marie Caffrey and Malcolm Dunn from the Northumbria World War One Commemoration Project. Marie will share some of the local soldiers’ stories she researched as part of this acclaimed project and Malcolm will read excerpts from letters they sent home.

In support of our exhibition which opens in October, ‘Merchant Navy – Tyneside Stories’, they will include some local seafarers who lost their lives during WW1.

Marie Caffrey, who has been a researcher with the Northumbria World War One Commemoration Project for almost ten years, will give her talk ‘The Soldiers’ Stories’. Marie will share some of the local soldiers’ stories she researched as part of this acclaimed project and Malcolm Dunn will read excerpts from letters they sent home.

Marie said: “As part of the WW1 project we delivered a programme of talks about military matters. With details of almost 4,000 men and women on our database, it seemed fitting to include a talk about the some of the people who lost their lives on battlefields, whose stories I came across during this research.”

Marie and Malcolm have given the talk a number of times over the years, always adapting it to the local area. In support of our exhibition which opens in October, ‘Merchant Navy – Tyneside Stories’, they will include some local seafarers who lost their lives during WW1.

The WW1 project is a highly respected community heritage project, based on wartime experiences of the North Tyneside and wider North East communities. In 2016 it received The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service.

The project is proud of its memorial garden and blue commemoration plaques on the residences of fallen soldiers across the borough. The garden, which is maintained by project volunteers, is open to the public daily during the opening hours of the Linskill Centre in North Shields.
