Birds of the Tyne, including nesting kittiwakes

It is a pleasure to welcome back keen ornithologist and Old Low Light volunteer Dan Turner, who will talk about birds of the Tyne river mouth, estuary and fish quay and also River Tyne nesting kittiwakes, including recent activity to install kittiwake ‘hotels’ on the Tyne Bridge.

Dan has spent a lifetime observing the River Tyne birds. His ornithological interest from an early age includes ongoing, annual surveys of the nesting Tyne kittiwakes since 1994.

Heritage Talk: Rescue of the Rohilla

19 March 2024

As the second of a series of events during 2024 to mark the bi-centenary of the RNLI, Dorothy Brownlee will talk about the part played by the Tynemouth RNLI lifeboat crew, including her grandfather and great uncle, in the dramatic rescue of 50 people from the hospital ship, Rohilla, off the coast of Whitby in 1914.

Warm Space – Crafts and Coffee

15 March 2024

Old Low Light volunteers, Margaret Sturmey and Sue Myers, will lead a craft session on the top floor in the centre (materials will be provided). This follows on from their successful knitting and crochet sessions over the summer for the ‘sea of poppies’ project, resulting in over 3,000 poppies which were used in a display outside the centre in the lead up to Remembrance Sunday.

HERITAGE TALK: 200 YEARS OF RNLI – REFLECTIONS OF FORMER TYNEMOUTH COXSWAIN

As the first of a series of events during 2024 to mark the bi-centenary of the RNLI, Martin Kenny, formerly coxswain at the Tynemouth lifeboat station for 16 years, will talk about the service and its history, nationally and locally as well as some of his own experiences for which his bravery was commended.
