HERITAGE TALK THE BEST OF TIMES, THE WORST OF TIMES – THE LIFE OF GEORDIE RIDLEY

8 June 2024

Pat Stevens will talk about Geordie Ridley, the Tyneside concert hall songwriter and performer from the mid-19th century, whose songs were a commentary on working class life, the most well-known being Geordie anthems ‘The Blaydon Races’ and ‘Cushie Butterfield’.

Pat will reflect on how Geordie began song writing after an accident at work, singing in music halls and mining institutes across Tyneside at a time when many people were living in poverty, while at the same time great changes were taking place, with some people prospering.

‘More Things Seen’ – exhibition by local artist

28 May 2024 - 1 June 2024

A five-day art exhibition is to take place later this month by Linda Kay who is inspired by things that catch her eye when she is out walking or cycling. 25% of all sales will go directly to support our heritage centre.

A founding trustee and active volunteer at the Old Low Light, Linda has a background in graphic design and for more than 25 years ran her own successful company. Her early training, long before computers became the main design tool, provided a good grounding in everything from photography to life drawing.

Now retired, she is a regular walker and cyclist, and uses her time while out and about to store valuable visual memories, sometimes sketching or taking a photograph for reference.
