Volunteers’ Week 2024

This week celebrations are taking place across the country to mark the amazing contribution of volunteers.

Trustees and staff at the Old Low Light Heritage Centre are saying a big thank you to our own small army of volunteers who give their time freely every day that we are open.

For well over 10 years – even before we officially opened in 2015 – volunteers have been providing vital support, working selflessly with our staff team. Their efforts help make sure the centre is a welcoming and interesting place to visit whether for a coffee and a scone or to find out more about our local area’s heritage, history, and natural environment (or both).

Their roles include front of house duties, greeting visitors on arrival, explaining about our historic building, our exhibitions and events, serving hot drinks and snacks in the café, researching, curating and designing our exhibitions, giving talks and leading guided heritage and wildlife walks, providing live music sessions in the café, delivering tailored programmes of activities for school visits as well as tending to floral displays outside the building.

Last week, one of our volunteers exhibited her paintings on the top floor, with 25% of all sales coming direct to boost our funds and at the weekend, volunteers and friends of the Old Low Light had their first big plant sale of the year, again raising money for the centre.

We know we are truly fortunate to have so many volunteers, giving their time generously, week on week, and we are so grateful for their efforts. A big and sincere thank you to all of them.
