BIOGRAPHIES
THOMAS SLATER
I am as year 12 student at Royal Grammar School, with a passion for mathematics, physics and musical composition. Having been a student of David’s for just over a year, I have made significant progress towards my performance diploma, which I hope to achieve in the coming months. The twos Scarlatti Sonatas I shall be performing today are part of this diploma programme.
TIANA CHAN
Tiana Chan recently graduated from Durham University with an MA and BA (Honours) in Music. Growing up in Hong Kong, her musical talent was recognized early; by age 13, she attained the LTCL performance diploma in singing with distinction, and by age 12, she achieved the ATCL in violin, also with distinction. With the support of The Cecilia Kwok’s Church Music Organ Scholarship, she earned the ABRSM Grade 8 in organ with distinction at 15, after only two years of learning the instrument.
ARTHUR GRAHAM
Arthur Graham (14) started learning the Trumpet with Alastair Lord in 2018. From September 2024 he has received trumpet lessons from Marion Craig at the Centre for Advanced Training at The Glasshouse Gateshead, and continues to have jazz trumpet lessons with Alastair Lord.
KAREN RIDDLE
Karen has played clarinet since the age of 10 and is currently continuing her clarinet studies alongside managing her busy day job as a GP. During her time at University she was principal clarinet of the university chamber orchestra and wind band and in July 2023 she performed Weber’s Concertino for Clarinet and Orchestra with the Northumberland Orchestra. In December 2023 she passed her LTCL performance diploma with distinction.
CIARA GLASSWELL
I first discovered the violin at the age of six in Bahrain, and it sparked a lifelong passion for playing, performing, and striving to master the instrument. My musical journey has taken me through the Qatar Music Academy and the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, and I am now currently completing my BA Music Honours in Newcastle, majoring in performance. My musical experience spans a diverse repertoire—from classical orchestral works, being the concertmaster of Newcastle University Symphony Orchestra to my passion for violin and guitar Tango music, and performing in an R&B band exploring Bossa Nova and Jazz pop genres. I am particularly fascinated by the dynamic relationship between violin and piano. The sonata delves into the distinct, sometimes clashing sonorities of the two instruments—challenging the traditional idea of their seamless partnership.
HEATHER McKIM
Heather , from Darlington, has been studying with Jennifer Murray for 3 years now. She plays in the Cobwebs Orchestra in Speenymoor. As well as playing the clarinet she plays the alto saxophone..
Heather is always up for a challenge so at the moment she is learning Japanese! She has a great interest in Japanese culture and prides herself on her Sudoko skills.
ALEXANDRA LEE
Alexandra Lee is a final year student at Newcastle University, reading music and majoring in singing. She studies with Anne Marie Owens. She is a choral scholar in David’s Bishopwearmouth Choral Society and appeared as soprano soloist in their December performance of Handel’s Messiah . She will be doing her final recital at Newcastle in May.
GETHIN HEGARTY
I am 18 years old and have been playing instruments since I can remember, starting with piano, and picking up the clarinet soon after. I am a member of Tees Valley Youth Orchestra and the Glasshouse’s Young Sinfonia.
I will be playing the first movement of Weber’s Concerto No.1 in F Minor. I hope you enjoy it.
HELEN GRAHAM
Helen Graham (16) started learning the Flute in 2017, and since 2018 she has been taught by Brian Stewart. She attends the Centre for Advanced Training at The Glasshouse Gateshead, and plays with Young Sinfonia and Ponteland Community Wind Band
