HERITAGE TALK: WOMEN’S WORK – CROSS CHANNEL CONNECTIONS

We are very pleased to welcome to the Old Low Light Marie Delisle from Douarnenez in Brittany. Although our towns are many miles apart she will share the connections she has discovered with the women of the Douarnenez fishing community and the women of our North Shields fishing community.

Marie’s work focuses on ‘how women’s working-class memories of the maritime sector are commemorated in France and England’, and her research focuses on ‘the figures of the Penn Sardin, sardine workers, in Douarnenez and the herring girls in North Shields, and their place in our heritage.

We were very interested to hear of Marie’s research as we have continued to find our more about the herring girls and other women who supported the fishing industry following our very popular exhibition ‘That’s Women’s Work’ five years ago.
