We are very pleased to welcome back for the third time the Tynemouth Photographic Society with a wonderful exhibition in our café of 11 images of local scenes and events dating back to the late 1800s.
Images include fish quay scenes with fish wives and the herring fleet, the Low Lights, Clive Street and Liddell Street, as well as the launch of the Mauretania, the interior of Tynemouth Plaza and the Long Sands. (Photographs copyright of Tynemouth Photographic Society.)
The exhibition has been curated as part of the society’s efforts to celebrate the 800th anniversary of the founding of North Shields and the images, which represent a small selection from their extensive archive, have recently been on display in the Beacon Centre, North Shields. (A small selection remains on display in the shopping centre.)
Three years ago, the society, one of the leading photographic societies in the North of England, produced a book with almost 200 photographs from its archive collection. This is on sale in our café shop.
The society, which has club rooms at 106 and 107 Howard Street, North Shields, dates back to 1903 although there is a syllabus from 1894 for an earlier club, whose President was Walter F Corder, member of a prominent Quaker family, who later became the first President of Tynemouth Photographic Society. Mr Corder is also known as the founder of the North Shields Guano Works on North Shields Fish Quay.
The society welcomes new members. For further information go to www.tynemouthps.co.uk
