“The Archaeology of Clifford’s Fort” explores the long history of Clifford’s Fort at North Shields, from its origins as a 17th-century coastal defence to its later life as a submarine mining base, industrial site and finally a restored heritage landmark.
The display brings together historic maps, documents and decades of archaeological work to show how the fort was built, altered and used over more than 350 years.
Visitors can discover:
-
The fort’s defensive role and changing military technology
-
How archaeologists mapped, recorded and excavated the site
-
What was uncovered, from hidden structures to everyday objects
-
How the fort evolved into a centre for industry and later community life
-
The 2013 conservation project that saved the site for the future
Overall, the exhibition reveals how Clifford’s Fort has shaped and continues to shape the story of North Shields.
