Artist Linda Kay, a founding trustee of the Old Low Light Heritage Centre, has held several successful selling exhibitions at the centre over the years, each one resulting in a generous donation towards our running costs.
On this occasion, the exhibition, SPACE, will include more than 60 new paintings and drawings, many of local scenes.
Explaining the title, she said: “SPACE – we all exist within it, at a very immediate and personal level, as we move around during our daily lives. At the other end of the scale, our planet floats within an unimaginable, endless amount of it.
“My paintings and drawings can’t help but depict space and I find I am as interested in the space my subjects occupy as the space that exists between them – so-called ‘negative space’ – the areas where exciting things can happen!
“Whether I am looking at some small detail, like a crumpled leaf or considering a very distant view, I enjoy paying attention to how positive and negative areas nudge each other and how opposing colours can sometimes ‘jump’ when they touch.”
Linda, who has lived in North Shields for most of her life, is a keen walker and cyclist and captures subjects for paintings and drawings when she is out and about.
Her background in graphic design has a bearing on her work as she comes from a pre-computing age, when drawing, painting and photography formed part of her course work. In the latter part of her career, she became a member of the North of England Art Club and returned to painting and drawing, culminating with a BA Fine Art course. She is also an avid attender of painting and drawing classes, notably those run locally by Clare Money.
Although retired, Linda designs Old Low Light exhibitions and promotional materials.
