We wanted the story of North Shields to be told by the people of North Shields – and we knew there was a huge amount of knowledge out there in the local community about our history and natural history. We put out a call for help and we were amazed by the people who came forward.
Professionals and amateurs, all full of enthusiasm, got in touch, and are now part of our Research Group. They’ve had a massive input into our gallery, and have done some really exciting and original work. This included the unearthing of the original plans for Clifford’s Fort in the British Library, and research into the Old Low Light that has allowed us to commission a model of the building. Both the plans and the model are now on display in the gallery.
The group has also been able to put together a brilliant collection of maps of the local area covering five centuries, which are also for visitors to view.
The research continues and we have plans to develop the group into a North Shields Civic Society in the future. We’re also hoping to hold regular meetings and a programme of talks and events. Keep an eye on the What’s On section of the site for more information.
