A service is being held on Sunday 10 May at 2pm for members of the fishing community, their families and friends to honour fishermen from North Shields and beyond who have been lost at sea.

One of many around the country to mark National Fishing Remembrance Day, this will take place at the Fiddler’s Green Fishermen’s Memorial, Clifford’s Fort, North Shields Fish Quay.

We were pleased to see an article by Cultured North East about visitor numbers for the North East’s leading attractions during 2025 which showed that ours had increased by almost 25 per cent – and that we are doing well compared to others.

The UK Town of Culture is a new national competition launched by the Government’s Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) to celebrate the unique heritage, creativity, and identity of towns across the UK.

The year has certainly been one to remember.

We have been very pleased to be part of the North Shields 800 celebrations, have marked the 10th anniversary of the official opening of our heritage gallery, and have delivered a very broad programme of exhibitions, events and activities.

A stunning textile map of North Shields – a legacy of the town’s 800th anniversary year - created by around 60 local people will be on display from Tuesday 9 December in the café at the Old Low Light Heritage Centre.

Pete, along with the staff, volunteers and trustees of the Old Low Light, was delighted to welcome internationally renowned Finnish photographer Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen (MBE, Honorary Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society 2024) to Pete's exhibition Harvest From The Deep yesterday.
