A fabulous exhibition full of amazing stories and images!
This exhibition tells the stories of commercial fishing from the port of North Shields in the distant waters off Iceland and Greenland. Over 800 years of incredible innovation, economic and human challenge and adventure to fish for a resource that was considered to be heaven sent.
For the women and families left, it was a time of waiting and worrying whether their men would return home or not.
The industry, the Fish Quay, Low Town and the River Tyne from the 18th century to the present day has and still inspires artists, writers, poets, film-makers and photographers whose works can be seen in our complementary exhibition ‘Views From The Happy Hunting Ground,’ and events programme.
‘It Started With A Fish has been co-curated by the town’s fishermen, artists, photographers, students, animations, film makers and our volunteers, and we are asking our communities to come along an add their voice too.
The exhibition is open daily from 10:00 – 5:00, we look forward to seeing you.
