Peter Mayne was born in South Shields in 1952.
After leaving school he became an apprentice and served his time as a welder and metal worker at the Hawthorn Leslie shipyard in Hebburn on Tyne. He would later move to work at the Swan Hunter Neptune Yard in Wallsend.
After seven years working in the ship building industry, Peter was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to study at the Cleveland College of Art in Hartlepool. He then went on to the then Sheffield Art College, where he took a degree in Fine Art.
Peter returned to live in the North East in 2000 and now lives not far from the location of his early workplace in Hebburn.
Peter’s main interest is figurative painting and architectural drawing, although he is also an accomplished landscape painter. The Scottish colourists are among the painters he most admires.
Retrospective is an exhibition of Peter’s work from across his life.
