Peter Mayne was born in South Shields in 1952.
After leaving school he became an apprentice and served his
time as a welder and metal worker at the Hawthorn Leslie
shipyard in Hebburn on Tyne. He would later move to work at
the Swan Hunter Neptune Yard in Wallsend.
After seven years working in the ship building industry, Peter
was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to study at the
Cleveland College of Art in Hartlepool. From here he went on
to the then Sheffield Art College, where he took a degree in
Peter returned to the North East in 2000 and now lives not far
from the location of his early workplace in Hebburn.
In 2016 Peter exhibited with ‘The Shipyard Painters’ here at the
Old Low Light Heritage Centre.
Peter’s main interest is figurative painting and architectural
drawing, although he is also an accomplished landscape painter.
