‘The Pow Burn’ is the name of a tributary of the Tyne, which runs through Northumberland park in North Shields. It has played an important part in the development of town. In many respects it is the reason why the town was able to develop and flourish.
That being said, the Pow Burn is now almost hidden from sight, a vanished feature but one with an important story to tell.
In his book “The Pow Burn’ local historian and author Mike Coates records and explores the historical significance of this river. On 10th of February 2018 he invites you to join him at the Old Low Light where he will be discussing his work how the geography of North Shields has changed over time.
