The Old Low Light Heritage Centre is proud to support The Steps to Employment Project
The Building Steps to a Brighter Future and the Steps to Employment projects works with a number of partners who use the knowledge, skills and contacts of a number of businesses, charities, colleges and North Tyneside Council.
Each of these groups all based in North Tyneside work together as a consortium to help to design an individual plan designed just for you to help you into employment.
Our skilled and enthusiastic volunteers bring our visitors closer to the incredible story of the North Shields, delivering excellent customer service to visitors and helping them understand hundreds of years of history, as well as the amazing heritage of the local area.
Our volunteers are vital to our work—by joining them you’ll be helping to make a real difference to this important community asset.
People volunteer with us for a whole host of reasons:
- Gain heritage-based work experience.
- Gain catering work experience.
- Develop new skills.
- Meet people and make friends.
- Support the heritage centre.
- Have fun!

Welcome Desk and Heritage Gallery Volunteer
Are you inspired by helping our visitors enjoy their visit and discover more about local history and heritage? Our Welcome Desk and Gallery Volunteers welcome over 10,000 visitors to our exhibitions each year, and help people explore the heritage of the local area. This role focuses on meeting and greeting visitors on their arrival at Old Low Light, answering questions about the centre, selling tickets to exhibitions and events and guiding visitors through the history of North Shields.
The focus of this role is to support the running of the cafe at the Old Low Light Heritage Centre in order to provide a welcoming community space and help to raise funds to maintain Old Low Light. You will welcome customers and support staff to help assure the smooth running of the cafe by assisting with serving customers, operating the till, clearing tables, assisting with cleaning the kitchen and equipment and helping with food preparation.
You need to be 18 years old or over to apply for this opportunity.
Help us inspire and celebrate North Shield’s varied and diverse heritage by volunteering to help us to organise and deliver events across the year at the Old Low Light Heritage Centre. You don’t need to have any event experience; just lots of enthusiasm for helping our visitors enjoy their visit to the heritage centre by encouraging them to take part in our activities.
